Lepas KR1M, Kini Pakatan Biawak Cuba Menyerang Mydin

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 8 — Petaling Jaya Utara MP Tony Pua said today the RM386 million allocation to help reduce prices of consumer items in Sabah and Sarawak is a move to enrich Mydin Mohamed Bhd (Mydin) and kill off competition.

The DAP MP told reporters out of the total amount, RM299 million would be used to ensure price uniformity of goods in the Kedai Runcit 1 Malaysia (KR1M) stores managed by Mydin in east Malaysia with Peninsular Malaysia.

“The question remains as to why is it that this benefit will not be extended to all other shops in Sabah and Sarawak offering these ‘basic necessities’,” Pua (picture) said.

He added that this subsidy given to Mydin was in effect killing off competitors in Sabah and Sarawak and should instead be made available for all retailers in the east.

“There is absolutely no need for the government to sponsor its crony to open up new shops in these areas to compete unfairly and kill off local shop owners,” he said.

Pua said while the opposition supports any measure from the government to reduce prices of goods for east Malaysians, it should not be a mechanism to profit cronies.

“The approach taken by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak is clearly designed to profit only Mydin Mohamed Holdings Bhd as the allocation goes direct to the company to set up these stories,” he added.

Pua also criticised the increased cost in building individual KR1Ms.

“The allocation of RM87 million to set up 57 shops still costs RM1.53 million for each store on average,” he said.

Pua said that this was three times the initial price of RM470,000 per store allocated in the previous budget.

“The costs should be more, about 20 per cent more. Not to the point of costing 200 per cent more,” he added.

During the Budget 2013 tabling, Najib said that the government would allocate funds to bring down prices of goods in east Malaysia through a new initiative dubbed the Price Uniformity Programme, bearing transport costs and building 57 KR1Ms to the tune of RM386 million.

Bijak… Bijak…
